Living the History

We have yet another busy week! Grace and I attended a very interesting program at the very first community center in the United States on Monday. It was in a northern section of Queens. The staff were wonderful, with a broad base of knowledge about the 1860's through 1900 (when the Institute began) and a zeal for telling others about the area!

Grace is also attending an Archeology Camp this week on "Mesoamerica". The leader's name is Geof "Big Dog" Purcell, and he is just amazing! He is teaching the children how to dig exactly as he would on his own digs, as well as about the history of the site they are working on. He simulates the site by digging the home's back yard and placing artifacts as they would have been placed. Yes! You read that correctly! It's absolutely AMAZING! He also plays a game with the children in the afternoon about resources and how they effect a civilization! The dig goes for 3 more days! It is a 1 hour trip there and then back again, and it goes from 10 am until 4pm. Grace fell asleep at 8 pm last night, after all the digging yesterday! What a program! :) Here's a website! http://www.dothedig.net/

That sounds like an awesome program. How neat that you found it and a good way to spend the week.

I agree. This sounds awesome. Tiresome, yes. Maybe she'll discover something neat as she digs.

This sounds awesome! I'd like to do it myself. I looked up some of the upcoming digs but didn't find any close by. I'll have to see if we couldn't do the drive.
