I am a bit incensed by this Article.

Why I didn't want a Girl...

The reason I am annoyed and upset over this is not because Amy Wilson doesn't want a girl. According to the end of the article, she "gets it" now...
Well, "Whoop-dee-do"  for Amy. I'm glad she "gets it" now, but I am confused as to what exactly she "gets".   In her article, she describes not being able to stomach the enless reruns of The little Mermaid etc, on account of having a girl. This last revelation upsets me to no end, as it shows to me just what a forgone conclusion it is that a "girl" will  automatically  go for "Little Mermaid" over any other entertainment choice. It sickens me, frankly.  Until idiots like these quit perpetuating obnoxious stereotypes in the media like this, girls everywhere will be doomed to Pepto Pink clothing and pink plastic ironing boards for play toys.
For GOD sakes I sincerely hope she didn't get rid of her TWO son's-worth of baby clothing because this one is a "girl".  :/

Here's my soap box...

I know someone like this, she has a girl, she keeps saying.."I wanted a boy, I don't get girly".
WTF? My dd is both girly and tuff,
so I don't get them.
I don't understand women who don't like other women.

My little girl was a princess and a hockey player all rolled into one - and a delight to raise!

I agree guys. That's why I posted this. "GIrl" does not signify the automatic and insatiable need to wear a frilly skirt, any more than "Boy" indicates the need to play with matchbox cars.

Folks always told me that she'd be into dolls and play "nicely" with them, be bookish and quiet. My child( although bookish to some extent) does NONE of these things. She's got a strong voice, a VERY strong Body, plays with stuffies, but the stuffies are "clans" or characters in a grand Tolkien-esque saga...
I woudl expect no less from a boy--but she's a girl;)
I say "So What?" Gender has No bearing on any of it.
If WE let it, then it does, and will. WE perpetuate the stereotypes that parents so often bemoan are the problems with our teenage girls!

UGH! Even more than the princess thing itself, my pet peeve is the automatic denigration of traditional girl things. What the hell is wrong with pink? With dolls? I thought everyone understood that the problem is with *limiting* what kids get to do or be interested in. Is a girl liking The Little Mermaid that much worse than a boy liking Transformers or Pokemon? Is soccer inherently preferable to ballet or figure skating?

Double UGH! I could rant all day, but this article really hit me in two sore spots: the widespread belief that girls are much cooler when they embrace boy stereotypes, and the confusion between random blog-worthy rambles and real journalism/essay writing. Not every thought merits an op-ed or syndicated column. I can't believe people get paid for stringing together this crap!
